Be present

family photography

If not now, then when?

It can take foresight to arrange photography for your family. Of course, you’ll look at the photos now, but ultimately they will gain value with time. They will really come into their worth when you come to reflect.

If we don’t take them now, you won’t have them later. It’s impossible to go back and capture those times later down the road.

It’s a lot, right? Raising kids, keeping them growing. Taking the time to record your journey with your own parents.

You can’t be everywhere.

By booking me to take your family photography, you make yourself space to be present.

“We have now had the pleasure of having two family shoots with Sarah. She first came when our daughter was around three weeks old. Our house (and everything else) was chaotic but Sarah made it all feel so calm and so easy, and the photographs are beautiful, natural and felt so “us”.

We then most recently had photos to mark our daughters first birthday. Sarah was relaxed and accommodated unpredictable naps and weather - and she made us all so comfortable that my daughter suddenly decided to really love the camera and the photos really let her personality shine through.

I am so glad we chose Sarah and we would never go anywhere else. Something that could have felt awkward or uncomfortable became a really enjoyable experience, with photographs that we will treasure forever.”

Got more questions? Have a look at the FAQs below

  • I mean, mine don’t. This is about communicating the connection within your family, not about making them into something they’re not. We’ll work with them to catch them at their best. I’ll spend some time at the beginning of the shoot showing them my camera and settling them in to the process. It can always help to have some snacks on hand, or favourite treats for the win!

  • There are some tips for making this easy. The first one is, be comfortable. If you feel that going into the shoot, you’ll love the pictures more. Don’t dress in a way you think you should, dress in a way you actually would. It isn’t necessarily about coordinating outfits, but it’s more about checking they don’t outright clash. Make an overall choice - stay as neutral and timeless as you can - whites, navy, greys, jeans, earthier tones. Or go bright and funky - avoid mixing both and be mindful of stark colours - purple, red, black. Plain clothing, rather than lots of logos and pictures on T-shirts etc.

  • It’s not something you do every day, have a person come and record you being a family. Also, there’s a whole discussion about handing over the control of someone taking your pictures of you. I talk more about this on my blog so come and have a read.

  • Let’s be honest, there’s a chance it could be slinging it down. I’ll check the weather in the days leading up to your shoot and keep in touch with you. If it looks like heavy rain we’ll reschedule. Other than that, we’ll go ahead.

  • I aim to turn around shoots within two weeks. If there is any issue with this I will let you know. You will receive a link to your online gallery where you can directly select and download your pictures. Your number of available downloads will be linked directly to the package you have purchased.

  • This is no problem, further images can be added on an individual basis and paid for online through your gallery.

What if?

  • For family and newborn shoots I typically work in the morning. This gives us the best chance of catching smaller children at their best, and means you’re not spending the day wondering how it will all pan out. It also means that if we’re out and about in York then we’ll be done before the parks and gardens get busy with others. If you need a special adjustment to that we’ll talk it through during booking.

  • York has some fantastic places to have a family shoot. I can suggest ideas for this. Alternatively I can come to you. We can talk about the space and light you have and whether or not it would work for your shoot. Newborn shoots are typically done in your home.

  • Absolutely. They’re a massive part of the family. If we can make it work, then we will.

  • No problem, gift vouchers are available to be posted out. You can download the terms and conditions here.

  • I know how it is, you make a plan, get organised, have no other plans around it, and on that one day, one of the kids is sick. Working with families means bringing some flexibility to the table. Just let me know with as much notice as you can. Payment for shoots is non-refundable but you can rearrange up to twice for free. Any further rearrangements will incur a £50 fee.
