york family photography - spring sessions are live
Spring family photography sessions are well under way now and summer bookings are opening up. If you’d like to know more about how they work, then this is the place. Here’s a practical guide to how it works and what you can expect, with special thanks to Charlotte and family for letting me share some of their absolutely gorgeous family session. Charlotte and Pete own Babyband, which is one of my all time favourite classes to photograph. If you have little ones and are looking for a warm, welcoming session that will get you right in the feels then get yourself over to join them. It’s exactly the kind of class I wish had been around when mine were small.
So let’s get into how it works. First up, when you enquire, I’ll send you some example albums. It’s important that my style works for you - my approach is relaxed and easy. I love a good laugh and I just spend the hour hanging out with you. No posing, no pretences, just family life and good chats. For me, family sessions come with no expectations. I’m a mum and I have 16 years of teaching experience under my hat. We take it as it comes and we keep the pressure off. Outdoor family sessions are an easygoing wander around your location, and you’ll find that your final gallery is full of the tiny inbetweens, those bits of life that you can feel, but you can never take pictures of yourself. Hand over to me, and I’ll do the rest.
If that all works for you, we’ll chat location and timings. Where possible, I recommend booking your session as early doors as you can. Typically, they start between 9 and 10am, which means if you’re outdoors, your location is likely to be chill and empty so your team will feel more relaxed and have the freedom to move around easily. As we move into the warmer months, it’s also helpful to avoid the bright sunlight. People don’t often think it, but cloudy days work so well for family photos, so don’t worry if it’s a bit overcast, it gives you gorgeous depth and colour in your images. A morning session is likely to catch everyone at their best and means it takes the pressure off because you won’t be spending the day wondering how it will all go.
Once that is sorted, you can hold your date with the session fee and a signed contract. I take family photography session step by step, and charge for my sessions separately to the image packages. That way you have the freedom to decide what you’re buying once you’ve actually seen the pictures. Your gallery will be with you within two weeks and your purchases are available for immediate download. Galleries typically end up with somewhere between 50 and 80 images, depending on your session. Image packages range from 10 downloads to the full gallery. If you choose a package with prints, they can take 2-3 weeks to come after ordering. Prints are Giclee on Hanhemule etching paper and they’re really something special. All prices can be found in my family photography brochure.
If it’s your first family session, and you’re not sure how to prepare, I’ll send you a guide that’s full of answers and ideas. It talks choosing outfits, including well loved toys and has some ideas for keeping things light and bringing out the best in your connection as a family. If the location allows it, pets are always welcome, I’m a dog mum and to me it’s not a family photo without him. If you’re in your costumes and lightsaber era, they’re actively encouraged. Do the things you do, bring the things you bring. Family photography is about catching you in you’re here and now, things will change quickly enough.
